A little bit of info is known about this game. It takes place 2 years where its predecessor, Star Ocean The Second Story left off and contains all 12 characters as well. It will feature 3 character parties (also reported to allow you to switch characters at any time), and a half-realtime battle system. Other things include fewer shops, so Item Creation will play a much larger role than before. Hopefully, the high failure rate from both the first and second games will be worked around some more.
The first plot details say the game will begin on Earth, where Crawd apparently gets an assignment to go to some other planet. How he meets up with characters from Expel is still unknown. Although I have this suspicion he brought 'em all back to Earth, and you might have to pick 'n choose a party before beginning.
The link cable ability is supposed to allow multi player action during battles ('bout time!). Still woulda been cool if you could bout with the other person's party though. ^^
While official details are still sketchy, some of the things shown in the screenshots appear interesting and keeps the game a bit apart from the other two in the series. If you look at the menu screenshots, you:
won't see anything regarding experience levels. It's likely the game will incorporate a stat-building system simliar to Square's Final Fantasy II (famicom) and most of the SaGa series. If you've never played either of those games, think this: Unlimited, CUSTOMIZABLE growth. Yes, you can build up forever, the only limit is the maximum stat value (which is quite high, as in Star Ocean, the maximum is usually 9999...). In FFII, and SaGa series, the stats you gain are dependant on your actions during battle. Hopefully, they'll take it to the next level. In my opinion, this change would be for the far better.
see that the item maximum seems to have been dropped all the way down to 8. They probably did this to make the Familiar skill to actually be useful.
probably see there's a CHANCE that they may have *FINALLY* fixed the problem with the huge item list. See the icons in the items menu? There's a chance you may use those to simply display the type of item it refers to, instead of sorting them that way. That would be really nice...
will see the person you walk around with can be changed. Yay.
might notice that the menu screen uses Star Ocean 1's logo. =)
