Forget the impressions!
Read my official Tales of Eternia review! I finished the game, reviewed it and submitted it to GameFAQs the other night, but read this one instead... it's revised and it's long (about 13KB). And so, the third's the charm...

While you wait for the update...

Ikeru! Ikeru!
Lazy 'ol me hasn't updated in over 4 months and it looks pretty lifeless around here. Ah well, forget about that...

So, where did we leave off?

Enix America released Valkyrie Profile in English a few months ago. Great game, still domestic RPG of the year no contest. On other notes, the translation is of high quality. The script is a great read, and the voice acting is fantastic (for the most part) for an english dubbed RPG. Overall, the opposite of Star Ocean 2's translation. Though there are Japanese version purists that don't like it. So, if you know Japanese, go with the Japanese version, if not, the english version is a fine alternative (and it has a couple of nice extra features, like being able to sort your item inventory and save halfway through the long intro!).

Namco released Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon for Gameboy Color in Japan on November 10th. I finally got my copy of the game a couple weeks ago. It's a nifty little game.

And my current obsession of the moment... Tales of Eternia, third game in the Tales series and import RPG of the year was released at the end of November. Excellent game, much better than Tales of Destiny. I ordered the premium box version, and the thing is huge... best estimate of size would be it being as long as Dreamcast console box with about 2/3 the girth. My outdated impressions can be found here.

tri-Ace themselves have been extremely quiet concerning Star Ocean Blue Sphere all of a sudden. The release on their page said it'd come out late 2000, but no one's heard anything and it didn't appear at Nintendo's Spaceworld even though it was officially announced so originally... Could they be retooling it for Gameboy Advance? One could only hope...

Oh yeah! Today is also Tales of Phantasia SFC's 5th birthday. Bow and pay homage. ;)

          Site changes:

          None

I quit my job so I have some free time again. Prepare for mega content update soon... including the unveiling of the Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia pages.

ROM Hacking section is undergoing a complete redesign. It's being converted to a full site of its own and will be disbanded from here once it's finished and uploaded to a different server. VERGE page is being removed soon too, but it's not coming back in any shape or size. The page will inevitably become completely on topic.

The screens have arrived.
It's late. I'm tired. I have work tomarrow. It's past 12am. But they are here. Valkyrie Profile ENGLISH E3 screens have finally arrived. Go to VP's section to view them in the screen shot part. The text translation is looking very good, but the game stays serious as far as dialogue goes it shows... I'm not too impressed with the character name translations though... sigh... Arngrim......

More facelifting...
Well, since yesterday was a day off from work, I had some time to work on this page. As you can see, I've made button links to the sections now. It shouldn't looks so bland anymore up there.

I guess I should make it clear. I am unable to test this page update for bugs at the moment because I have the most horrible generic 56k modem in the world. Right now, it's going through some kind of fritz where it only seems to be moving around at about 2400bps. I hope my USR shows up today...

New stuff:
Links page is finally converted to the new format, and I think there are a lot of new links added. Also, it's more image intensive as I've given link buttons to the links I could get some for.
VERGE was updated with some somewhat sad news...

For some reason god only knows, NO english Valkyrie Profile screen shots from E3 ever emerged. It's quite unfortunate, since it's the only thing I wanted to see from the whole thing.

Well, so far, the poll's saying 70% like the idea of me adding the Tales sequels, 20% don't care and the other 10% are against it. Well, it's looking quite likely that I may end up doing it, but due to my work fiasco, it may take a long time for me to get them (creating a section does take a long time, ya know...).

Anyways, off to finishing LUNAR...

Gaming-Intelligence english Valkyrie Profile impressions!
The GIA has released their impressions, and to their surprise, it's looking like an excellent localization! To quote them:

Despite its Quarter 3 2000 release date, Valkyrie Profile was shown at Enix's booth in nearly fully localized form. The translation was filled with references to Norse mythology and well-used, specialized vocabulary--in the GIA's opinion, a plus. Enix stated that they viewed localizing this title as just bringing it to a new audience, "like a museum curator," preserving as much of the original nuance and emotional content as possible. The artwork and music are as gorgeous as they were in the Japanese release.

The voice acting was also a notch above what we were expecting; Enix has apparently learned from the misfortune Star Ocean: The Second Story underwent. Voice actors and actresses have previously worked on project such as the Pok駑on animated TV show and Metal Gear Solid. With just a few short months until Valkyrie Profile hits U.S. shores, the title is coming along nicely.

I've never played Metal Gear Solid and I've only seen the Pok駑on TV show once (and don't remember the voices). But people who've said they played MGS said the voice acting was some of the best they've ever heard. Hats off to Enix!

Work is fun
Work is starting to get a bit more hectic. Todd got fired, Ethel quit, Randy quit, Tim and Rose are about to quit... what this all means is that I'm going to have more hours to make up for their shifts and will have even less time to do this page. But so far, it's been fairly worth it. I can catch up with game releases now, and I can also, FINALLY put together a new Athlon PC. The remaining pieces of this Compaq will die a happy death in a garbage compactor...

New stuff:
Updated and added some FAQs for SO2 and VP.
Added a nice new POLL. Should I cover Tales of Phantasia's "unofficial" sequels, Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia? Your votes will determine that. There are several different answers for "Yes and No". Just select one closest to your opinion on it. The poll is hosted by Bravenet since the emulationworld polls don't seem to be working right... at least for me.

If I can find a decent, and attractive font, the table of contents links will be changed into buttons.

Links are also still being worked on. Slowly, but surely. I'm trying to get link images for every link on there.

Sorry for such a cheap update after not updating for nearly two weeks, but my job's hours are expanding and I REALLY want to finish LUNAR: Silver Star Story before LUNAR 2: Eternal Blue comes out!

Tales of Phantasia Collectibles
I have a lot of content update material. I've decided to update it piece by piece. So:

What's new:
If there's anything I love to collect, it's Tales of Phantasia related merchandise. Well, I decided to invade Yahoo! JAPAN Auctions and looked up テイルズオブファンタジア (Tales of Phantasia) and was absolutely overwhelmed by the number of collectibles available! There was so much stuff, I couldn't help but rip off the scans for all the items! I've compiled all these and created a collectibles page! I wish eBay had all these goodies so I could buy them in a second. Unfortunately, if eBay gets any ToP collectibles, they're usually just shitajiki (pencil boards) that I can find on a decent anime store online :(. If you want to see the collectibles, go HERE! :)

Enix America hints at a dubbed version of Valkyrie Profile
It's become evident that Enix will indeed be dubbing the US version of Valkyrie Profile into english. This tidbit has been taken from Enix's Valkyrie Profile page on it's website:

Valkyrie Profile will feature 2 CDs with over 2 hours of professional voice acting as well as a broadcast quality animated prologue.

"Will" is the keyword here. *Will* feature 2 hours of professional voice acting. Doesn't it already feature professional voice acting? Sounds like they're trying to say that it will feature 2 hours of professional english voice acting. If this is true, oh god say that Enix will be true to their word...

4/19/00
E3
You might have seen it coming, but Enix America Inc. plans to show off a preliminary English Valkyrie Profile at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). E3 begins on May 11th, which is roughly a few weeks away. English screenshots and possibly a movie should be available then. Just keep praying that they'll announce that it'll be subtitled. Do you really want to see another Star Ocean 2 as far as voice acting goes? How about even during full blown voice acted dialogue (like the unfortunate Grandia)? Ugh.

Thanks to The Magic Box for the news.

I should hopefully have a site content update coming soon...

Enix officially announces partial 2000 lineup
Not too surprising, but Valkyrie Profile was one of the games confirmed for English release. It was announced to be released this fall. It's defintely very well worth checking out, and easily destroys tri-Ace's previous offering, Star Ocean: The Second Story. If you liked SO2 and have your doubts about VP, fear not. Valkyrie Profile is the greatest game to bear the tri-Ace logo, hands down, no contest. Just PRAY that the voice acting will be subtitled (the original voice acting is VERY good) and also some English screen shots will come out soon.

However, no info reguarding Star Ocean: Blue Sphere was announced (or even Dragon Quest VII, for that matter, so you KNOW this isn't final...).

Getting a job
This is my last non holiday weekday of being home all day. Starting tomarrow, I'll be beginning my job. I'll be working 6 hour shifts from 11am - 5pm. In other words, there may be a shortage in updates due to my new job.

New stuff:
Added my Tales of Phantasia SFC/PSX differences FAQ. Still needs a little bit of work...
Very small update to my FF6 Hard Type hack page over in ROM Hacking
Finally, the frame row for the ad/counter has has been put into a fixed height frame! You should have more view space in the main frame now if you run in 800x600+ resolution. Big thanks to Fox Astron for the help! ^^
Oh yeah, and this server has logstats. Thanks to it, I was able to point out broken links in a flash. If you were getting broken images and/or downloads, try them again. I think they've all been crushed (except HTML links in the old news).

4/5/00
Tokyo Game Show
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere was in the line-up of games to appear in Japan's Tokyo Game Show. Since it would appear that it wasn't exactly a "major" title, no one bothered to release any new info regarding it.

E3 is just around the horizon. Not many games have been announced in the line-up yet, but hopefully we'll see an english Valkyrie Profile on display there...

The VERGE 2 game development engine has been officially updated to VERGE 2k (aka V2.5). I guess this is the 16-bit color version, but I haven't messed with it much. Go get it. In addition, an apparently better unnofficial version has also come out. Get that at The Verge Archives

One last thing. I decided to create a new, Unoffical verge-rpg.com temporary board and hosting it here. I did this because the server that the 'official' one is on is incredibly unreliable. Hopefully it'll get used more... anyway, Go here if you want to see it/post on it.

Stuff:
Replaced the Crawd and Rena illusrations in Star Ocean: Blue Sphere with much cleaner versions.
Added my hacked Tales of Destiny DexDrive save to ROM Hacking. This one is a great save which enables Lilith Aileron as a playable character.

R.I.P. Xoom
This is GREAT. Xoom is now nevermore forevermore (hah)! Now I'm being hosted by one of the largest and most popular emulation sites on the internet, known only as Zophar's Domain. Many thanks to Taichou for the suggestion, and Zophar for the final OK. This server is great. It's fast (dual T3 I think), even has goodies like CGI! All it costed was to have a frame with a little ad in it. It's a small price to pay when you consider the benefits. =)
Instead of just porting this page right away, I spent a lot of time enhancing it, making it appear much more attractive. Nearly every section on this page has gone through the semi-redesign... only a couple parts still need finishing, but I think it's done enough to release.

Uhh, and if you're using Netscape, don't expect everything to work correctly or appear correctly. I have not debugged this page yet to be completely Netscape compliant. That damn browser is too picky on how things are formatted and if it ain't done the way Netscape likes it, things won't appear right. -_-

Some of the bigger changes:
Added a brand spanking new message board! Since this server has CGI access, I'm now able to have my own hosted. It's a WebBBS, it's very similar to WWWBoard, except the fact that it can use cookies to store your name, email address, website, etc so that once you enter them, you'll never have to enter them again. A VERY VERY big thanks to (wraith) for helping me set it up! Well, my old one was a dead as ever, hopefully this one won't.
The shortlived RealAudio/Music player is gone and it's never coming back, unless I decide to go back to mods again. First off, the Geocities account where the old music files were hosted died nearly a month ago (thus explaining why the music hasn't worked), second, Geocities now has a ban on linked files, so I can't create another account to host them again. Third, the emulationworld server doesn't allow 'illegal' files (the music does fit that description!). If you were one of the silent three people who used it, sorry. Thanks to Jason Ostapyk for some specially encoded Star Ocean 2 RA files I was going to use, but now I can't do that. So now, the frame has been replaced with the ad which is fine with me.
Enjoy this massive update, I guess.

I'm not exactly good with creating frames. What I'd like to do is make the bottom row frame be exactly 60 pixels high, no matter what the browser window size is. I tried for about an hour or two the other day with the frame and just couldn't get it to look the way I wanted it.

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere screenshots
This is just a quick but effective update, since I'm in the process of moving this page. Here they are, the first 5 screen shots ofStar Ocean: Blue Sphere (aka Star Ocean 3). They seem pretty impressive for a GBC game...

(screenshots have been snipped. See theStar Ocean: Blue Spheresection)

I still find it odd that a 32-bit game is getting an 8-bit sequel...

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere
Awhile ago, Star Ocean Gameboy Color was announced that it wasn't going to be a port of the original game. In a report by Videogames.com, Star Ocean: Blue Sphere will in fact be a 100% true sequel to the second game, Star Ocean The Second Story, and takes place 2 years from where it took place. The report also says that the game will sport 3 character parties, and a half realtime battle system. There will be fewer shops in this game, so Item Creation will play an even higher role for success. With a link cable, you will be able to play against a friend. It is expected to ship during this summer in Japan. Given the release date isn't far off, screenshots will likely appear shortly.

Huh. I wonder if -this- really IS Star Ocean 3? I mean, it's a true sequel and all, not a spinoff... Now I'm confused whether or not I should put this game's info in Star Ocean 3's section...

Valkyrie Profile and... Tales of Destiny

Don't mind my request about the DexDrive and Valkyrie Profile anymore. I don't need it. I learned of a fairly easy swap trick method that you have to use just before the disc change and it worked. I just hope my PSX can hold out till PSX2 comes around...

I got my copy of Tales of Destiny back and started playing around with its DexDrive saves. Wow, this game is so very easy to hack! No checksum, no CRC... how would you like to get Leon back in your party? How about getting a very cute, secret character that you cannot get during a normal game? Who is this character? Hint: She makes a cameo appearance in the Tales of Phantasia remake :). Memory card save hacking doc coming soon! You must have DexDrive or have emulator memory card saves in order to a have use for it too (and a PC computer would help...).

Grah. I postponed this update longer than I had planned and fell really behind. I was going to update 10 days ago... looks like I'm beginning to fall behind again in updates.

Stuff:
Updated Valkyrie Profile page a little, such as deleted the storyline description (the old GIA one that was used up there was pretty off from what it really is, yet I still don't know how to size down the storyline descriptions in FAQs...)
Steven Bruck updated his massive Valkyrie Profile FAQ a couple of times again since the last update... also added his brand new Hard mode guide.
Edward Chang's character FAQ, and Noel Herredura's pickpocketing guides have been updated for Star Ocean 2.
Links have undergone a pretty major update. A lot of new links, and a lot of updated descriptions.
You know, how come nobody ever bothers to mail me about site problems? I mean, jeez. I finally download Netscape 4.7 and tested the page out. Turns out the games page table didn't show up in it! I mean, with something THAT major, I should've gotten mails in very quickly. It wasn't working in Netscape because I had forgotten to put a </table> command at the end of the table. It's working now, phooey.
Oh yeah, and speaking of site problems, the vs. Dhaos thing above doesn't show up right in MSIE 5.5b (which I downloaded as well). I can't seem to fix it to work in IE 5.5. Must be a bug in the browser...

MAJOR MAJOR update to the Valkyrie Profile section coming out within several months. No, not just new stuff, but an entirely NEW design. A very special design, and it won't look like or resemble any of the other sections in any way at ALL. It'll also make this site the definitive web site for Valkyrie Profile information! It's going to be a lot of work, so that's why it's going to take awhile. By the way, it's such an advanced design, that it's going to require Internet Explorer 4.0 and above-- Netscape 4.7 didn't display it correctly.

I have an 'impression' review of this game right below here. I'm not finished with the game yet (I also started over, and trying to play the game EFFECTIVLY). I realize the text in the 'impression' review might be too small to read if you're on a resolution higher than 1024x768. If that's true, change your res, or copy and paste it into a word processor or something and increase the size. I did this so that the table doesn't appear too big...

Graphics:9
The graphics are nice, and the character animation is as smooth as ever, and the game runs at a full 60 FPS. The only problems are that the backgrounds are not actually as good as the screen shots appear to show, but still blow away much of what I've seen in FFVIII, and that there is some slowdown in some situations. There is little FMV.
Music:7.5
General 'good' Motoi Sakuraba style music (bad Sakuraba style= Tales of Destiny). Even in his 'good' form, the music is still a mixed bag. There are some really cool tunes though, but haven't heard any that are purely 'garbage' yet either ('garbage' includes Feenal Tower of SO2, Jie Revors' tower in SO1, etc...), which is good. I kinda wish they'd dump Sakuraba and hire Yasunori Mitsuda (he IS a free lance guy now, right?). That'd rock my world...
Story:5
Eh, it's been pretty light so far, maybe because this game is very non-linear. Though the story is tied in with the general concensus of the gameplay. The only major storyline scene was the intro, the rest I've seen are basically character developments (there are 35 characters in this game, and there's a development scene for that character usually before you end up getting them. Some appear to be very interesting.
Gameplay:A freaking 11
The game part of this proves that Masaki Norimoto is really a god. You wouldn't believe it if I told you, but this game puts even computer RPGs to shame in this category and that's why it gets an 11. Why's that? I couldn't tell you unless I write a minimum of 10kbs worth of text. The gameplay is almost wholly original, on top of that. The only gameplay related thing that bears a resemblance to anything we've seen before is the skill system; which is reminicent of the one in the Star Ocean series. It's purpose however is different for the most part, though. There are FOUR types of skills, and are all battle related. Yes, ALL battle related, and none of them (so far) are at all the same as the ones in Star Ocean. Only the way they are handled is the same (using 'points' to level them up). The rest of the gameplay is basically completely original (and originality done right. Are you paying attention, Mr. Sakaguchi?).
ChallengeVaries
It really does vary. It depends on HOW you play the game. If you screw around too much and miss events where you fight things, you'll end up going too far! The monsters will devastate you! Take the game nice and slowly :)

To rate games fairly, I give THREE final scores. One based on a gameplay point of view (for people who like GAMEPLAY RPGs that focus more on game than story), one on a storyline point of view (for people who don't really care about gameplay), and an average of both (who generally like a balance of both). Here are the scores I'd give it currently:
Gameplay: 9.5
Story: 7.0
Average: 8.0
Keep in mind these scores are not final, just my impression at the moment.

In some other irrelevant news, I'll be getting a new 56k modem (die 14.4!), Suikoden II and SaGa Frontier II next week. Yay, more RPGs to suck my time, and I still have to finish Breath of Fire III, Final Fantasy 5 Anthology, Final Fantasy 8, and at least Normal mode of Valkyrie Profile. By the way, Wild ARMs 2 looks really good and promising and I'm really interested in it... by the way here's one helluva tough screen shot of it...

She's helluva tough, sucka!

Do you have Valkyrie Profile and a DexDrive? If so, I need help

I got Valkyrie Profile import yesterday, and I need to get to disc 2. Problem is, I use a plug in mod for PlayStation imports, and the game does not prompt a save after finishing disc 1. That basiscally means that my save file won't get 'tagged' to be on disc 2 and I can't continue. Because of the period system, I can't do much in the game unless I start over. All I ask is that someone with a DexDrive, with Valkyrie Profile (and can get past disc 1) to take my save, move it over to disc 2 save and send it back to me. This game is excellent so far and I don't want to have to wait until I import a PlayStation2 to play it on. If you want to help, give me an email! I'd be extremely grateful. Let this be a warning to people who want to import, but use the plug in mod.

Yes, you heard me, I really think this game is excellent so far and has a LOT of potential to be the greatest tri-Ace game yet (there's still a lot of stuff I have obviously not found yet...). If you want to view some of my impressions, check the Message board.

Finally, I realized I had forgotten to update the no frames version of this page in the last update. I guess I've got to get into the hang of doing it. Simply check Old News to see what you missed (if you care).

Stuff:
  • Steven Bruck's Valkyrie Profile FAQ/Walkthrough has had a major update (Actually two updates, almost more than 130kbs larger than the old one), and a new battle system FAQ has been added, which weighs in at 14KB.
  • Some New Star Ocean 1 FAQs have actually come out.
One is a very nice one about powering up your characters to godlike status early on and is quite large and worth reading if you want to do that.
Another is a VERY short skill system FAQ which appears to be geared at people who played the US Star Ocean 2 and imported the first game with interest and can read absolutely NO Japanese(the skill names used in it are the same as the US SO2, except for the skills that weren't in the US SO2; they are also listed in the order they appear on the list).
The third and final one is a general FAQ written by Exdeath that was written a long time ago, but I never got it up...

Games page created, Tales of Phantasia PSX translation not bloody likely at all...

Having 6 logos for 6 games on one line has proved too many since tri-Ace announced that Star Ocean for Gameboy color is a different game from the rest. I have made a Games page link on the Table of Contents frame above. Although IMO it makes site a little less attractive, but what's needed to be done is done...

Star Ocean Gameboy Color has its own section now.

Stuff:

Looks like NCS didn't get Valkyrie Profile at their planned time. So what did I do? I spent the additional $10 more at Tronix for my copy. I'll be getting it either Monday or Wednesday. :D

Working Designs' mystery RPG has had some very strong rumors floating around, but the rumors say it's not Tales of Phantasia. It's the Arc the Lad trilogy, for those who haven't heard yet. Okay, that's not the real problem though! Someone I know sent Working Designs an email about ToP, and he got a response pretty much saying they can't get the rights to do it. It _does_ however sound like they sported interest in it, though. What this is all means, is that either Namco does it, or nobody. What's the bloody likely hood of them doing it? Almost 0. After all, Tales of Eternia (the third Tales game) has already been announced for Japan. I guess you could always try sending mail to Namco themselves if you'd like to see it done-- send mail to support2@namco.com.

Gameboy Color Star Ocean-- not what you think it is.

As previously reported, the original Star Ocean was apparently being ported to the Gameboy Color. This is not true. In fact, it's going to be an entirely new game in the Star Ocean series. I seriously doubt it's going to be Star Ocean 3 though. In my opinion, it'll most likely be a spinoff game of the series.

Star Ocean GBC section coming soon (and the removal of the GBC info in the Star Ocean 1 section).

Shinsenden progress... a little, anyways.

Ack! It turns out "Shinsendou" is incorrect! The games' real name is "Shinsenden." The last kanji was DEN, the same one as in Seiken DENsetsu. What's even more odd is that could read that kanji myself... guess I didn't catch it. Thanks goes to akujin for the correction.

Stuff:
  • Updated the Shinsenden translation page (in ROM hacking)... but just a little. Check out the screenshot for the expanded menu!
  • Added the first Valkyrie Profile FAQs. One is a general FAQ (There is a MAJOR story spoiler in the little characters portion! I had the misfortune of reading it without knowledge of anything :( ), and the other one is an FAQ/Walkthrough (and is fairly large). Most names in both of them are a little inaccurate.

No frames 'n stuff

There is now a no frames version of this page. However it's only accessible if you use a no-frames browser. It's all contained in the index.htm file. Hopefully all the extra text in it will finally make search engines decide to pick up and index my site...
Stuff:
  • Main page text is now in an invisible 75% width centered table. Along with the text being justified, I think it looks much better and a bit more professional...
  • Updated a few and added a couple of new Star Ocean 2 FAQs, including arena stuff and a new Item list / Item creation FAQ
  • Updated Luke Drelick's Tales of Phantasia (SFC) walkthrough (goes to the end now), and WooJin Lee's Tales of Phantasia translation FAQ for the remake (now takes you up to the end of the Morlia Gallery in the past)
  • Added some really scans of some really awesome Tales of Phantasia pencil boards
  • Added tri-Ace's year 2000 Valkyrie Profile calendars also recompressed into zip format. 1024x768 hi quality version. If you want the 1280x1024 version or the low quality version of 1024x768, go find them at the downloads page at tri-Ace's website. They are very nice, but they suffer from the Leap year bug (Feb 29 exists on the february calendar and it shouldn't). They still make the most awesome wall paper in the world, though. 800x600 and 640x480 versions don't exist, unfortunately. Attempting to scale them down to those resolutions won't work too well, I'm afraid.
  • Added some new Valkyrie Profile characters. Including some I think the GIA missed...
  • Added tri-Ace's staff roll midi for VP
  • Added the case artwork for the original Japanese release of VP
  • There are several other small changes / additions to the Valkyrie Profile section

VP sure has a lot of characters. It appears tri-Ace hasn't even drawn (or put up) those big, really awesome pictures for every character yet...

I could have also made a slightly larger VP update, but most everything else out there that I found was tagged with GIA logos, and I HATE them. I decided against adding them because they'll make me look even more like a leecher. I try to provide original content whenever possible.

As a new ROM hack project, I've decided to attempt my first translation of an obscure famicom Dragon Quest RPG clone by the name of "Shinsendou." A page has been created in the ROM hacking section with some preliminary screenies.

The mystery of why Tales of Phantasia's PSX soundtrack is different from the game (and better IMO) has been solved! Thanks to Arima (who knows Japanese) on RPGFan's Import RPG forum, who read the booklet included with the soundtrack. It said the soundtrack uses a real synthesizer rather than PSX midi synthesis.

Valkyrie Profile will be mine

NCS will be getting Valkyrie Profile in next week! You know what? I'm going to be the first one to buy it there. ph34r me. Tons of people who've imported it find it to be one of the best, if not THE best game they've ever played. QuickStuff:
  • I've added 16 of the GIA's Valkyrie Profile screen shots.

OK, right now, I'm working and I'm on lunch break. Yes, spending lunch break updating this page. Just need to get in a few more hours of work done till I can afford VP import...

Quickie 2

The music player is back up after a quick absence (FRAMES VERSION ONLY!). But instead of being composed of poorly ripped mods, they are now **much** better RealAudio files. Right now, it has a bunch of songs ripped from my "enhanced" Tales of Phantasia OST (as I call it now, since it sounds wildly different from the PSX version of the game), so if you've never heard the soundtrack and would like to compare it to the PSX version of ToP, go ahead and give it a listen and see if the soundtrack's worth it to you. I think it is. As soon as (or if) I get permission, I'll upload some more music from console rips of Valkyrie Profile.
You're gonna need RealPlayer G2 or better installed on your system to hear the music. If you don't have it, go to Download.com and pick up the free version. Real's page sucks and it's hard to find the freeware versions of the stuff on their page, so find it with download.com.
One more thing... the song won't automatically start up. You'll have to select one yourself. If selecting a song does not work, that's because the lame Xoombar frame is up on top and it somehow interferes with this kind of stuff. Break out of it by re-entering through my V3 URL at http://surf.to/starocean. Bookmark that URL too since you never know when xoom's gonna crap out on me...

QuickStuff:
  • Quick updated all sections with justified text.
Oh yeah, I finally got to fight Lilith (Stahn Aileron's sister in Tales of Destiny) in the Tales of Phantasia remake. Does anyone know how to defeat her? She's pretty damn powerful (and kawaii) and could probably mop the floor up with Odin. I want my Dymlos Swordian!

Quickie

I released my Final Fantasy VI rom hack document to the world a couple weeks ago. I did it cause I'm not in a rom hack mood and would've had to delay and delay it even longer until I was, and well, I'm sick of delaying it. So if you have enough knowledge with a hex editor, go ahead look at the bastard here. Warning: It's a 100k HTML file, so yea, it's big. It's incomplete too, so lots of bytes aren't figured out yet.

Stuff:
  • Added some remake screenies for Tales of Phantasia that I made myself, so they are different than the ones floating around. They are better quality than I've seen out there too, except those stupid gray borders...
  • Text on this main page is now justified. I'll add it to the other pages when I update them later. I think it helps make text not look like a clump of crap...

Gameboy Color port of Star Ocean? Tales of Phantasia in English?

Working Designs announced that they are going to release a 'mystery' RPG in 2000. I can't really think of many _RPGs_ demanding to be released here at the moment. The only ones that seem to come to mind are Tales of Phantasia, Wild ARMs 2 and perhaps some new stuff in 2000, but the big name stuff seems like it's already headed here. This seems to make the chances of it being Tales of Phantasia for PSX much higher. But to to try to ensure it, you gotta mail them about it! The email address is below...

Magic Box has reported that a Gameboy Color port of the original Star Ocean on Super Famicom is in the works and and is planned for a year 2000 release. Considering Star Ocean 2's popularity, it may be one of the games that Enix publishes in the US during the year. At least it may finally be coming here, but...
Frankly, I don't know how this is possible, considering how the SFC version pushed the system to its limit and now is being scaled down to 8-bit level in lower resolution than an NES, are the battle scenes going to scroll, or are the battlefields going be scaled down and be even smaller? How are they going to redo the music? I think they should've taken the Tales of Phantasia route and have redone the game on PSX to improve on it, not cripple it.
In my experiences with the original SFC Star Ocean, I've found a convincing amount evidence that the game is incomplete. If the GBC version turns out to be 'complete', then it should be worth an investment if you liked the original.

Go! Gaming Intelligence has released a ton of cool videos and such about Valkyrie Profile, and are quite amazing. Now, if only they would dump the stupid Quicktime3 format and go mpeg! Quicktime is evil! >_<

More shiznit:
  • Added a couple of new Star Ocean 1 and 2 midis in their respective sections.
  • Added the little known data of the SO1 GBC port in the SO1 section.
  • Added some new Valkyrie Profile stuff.
  • Valkyrie Profile was released in Japan and is being very well recieved.
  • Mod player is dead. RealAudio coming soon...
This page needs a new font, I think. It's really kind of bleak with the default one. Anyone got a really cool one that would fit the site? Gimme a Mail if you do...

Tales of Phantasia for PlayStation is amazing! I finally had recieved it about 5 days ago. If you liked the original 16-bit version, you will _love_ this super duper improved version. There are so many differences and improvements, I cannot count them all. Look for a comprehensive FAQ that I'm writing that explains as many differences as I can possibly find, coming soon...
The only thing I find very odd is that the soundtrack I bought is actually very different from the one in the game. It's mainly a synth issue-- the synthesized intruments are different. It is _not_ a bad thing at all, in fact, the OST's synth is a major improvement over the actual game's. What does the game's synth sound like? It sounds like Tales of Destiny's... but don't fear, some tunes don't sound half bad with it. Scary...
At any rate, I really hope this is Working Designs' mystery RPG of 2000.

Heh. Seems like I got that junky old 14.4 piece of crap modem working again, so I can use the web on my crippled PC again. The 200 mb hard drive is now a thing of the past. I got me a new 8.4 gig. It'll take a long time to fill with this 14.4 though...
